Asitane Restaurant is located in Edirnekapi, considered by many to be one of the most important areas of historical Istanbul. The restaurant lies in the shadow of the mighty Chora Church which is famous for its mosaics and is one of the most important and well kept buildings of the Byzantine era. Located high up in the foot hills overlooking the Golden Horn, Asitane opened its doors in 1991, together with the Kariye Hotel, now a restored 19th century traditional Ottoman mansion.

The restaurant, whose dishes reflect the eclectic nature of the Turco-Ottoman neighbourhood, was named Asitane which not only means "Head Gate" in Farsi but was also one of the many names given to Istanbul throughout the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Thus it was decided that the restaurant should specialize in fine Ottoman court cuisine.

Extensive research was undertaken six months prior to the opening of the restaurant as kitchen registries deep from the archives of Topkapy and Dolmabahçe Palaces were scoured for recipes, and relevant documentation was found in Istanbul's Beyazyt and Millet libraries. Additional important sources of information for the duration of the preparation period were dug up using old Ottoman dictionaries, the written historic accounts of various statesmen, medical practitioners and soldiers. 

In the thirteen years that it has been open Asitane Restaurant is now able to boast an impressive archive comprised of over 200 forgotten sweet and savory recipes, which are prepared in keeping with the cooking methods of 500 years ago.

Nearly one hundred recipes had to be discarded or modified in order to either suit today's modern palate, or simply because the ingredients no longer exist in this day and age.

The menu now features dishes originally prepared for the sumptuous celebration feast given for Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's two sons, Bayezid II and ?ah Cihangir, at Edirne Palace in November 1539.

The restaurant periodically has themed weeks such as "The Age of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror", "Ottoman Aphrodisiacs", "Fish and Seafood Ottoman Style"as part of its mission to introduce the tastes of a bygone era to all.

Asitane Restaurant is open everyday from 11:00-24:00. Additionally the restaurant caters for weddings, organizations and other special events.

In the heart of Nisantasi, one member of an Istanbul chainlet of Italian restaurants has been providing meals to the young and sophisticated crowd for over 10 years. It is located below ground level at the center of the shopping district on Abdi Ipekci Street in a large room decorated with Italian tiles and features a full bar and a sizeable wine list. The menu has all the usual favorites including about twenty variants of a rather good thin crust pizza, loads of pastas ( spaghetti bolognese was an excellent version ), classic chicken and veal dishes, and typical desserts. Many of the pastas and entrees emphasize seafood, both finned and shelled. The servers were friendly and efficient. Reviewers suggest on the internet that this chain offers some of the best Italian food in the city. Not the best we have ever eaten, but not bad at all. Note - a no smoking section is not provided here, and smoke wafts througout the room. 

MEZZALUNA - a kitchen instrument comprised of one or two curved blades in the shape of a half moon ( mezzaluna in italian ) with a wooden handle on each end. The double bladed mezzaluna is used for chopping herbs while the single bladed type is used for slicing pizza.

Pandeli was an Anatolian Greek who came to the city and opened his famous restaurant in 1901, originally in Beyoğlu near the fish market. It soon became famous for the quality of food and for its clientele: everyone from Atatürk to visiting prime ministers visited. In the notorious anti-Greek riots of 1955 the Turkish Prime Minister Menderes, afraid of losing his favourite restaurant, had it moved to its present location in the Egyptian bazaar. Now as the city's rich move further and further north to places like Levant and Maslak, the area is full of shops selling cheap clothes and plastic beads, it is a remnant of the days when this was the centre of the city, and the whole eastern Mediterranean. The Menu, like the décor, has continued with the style of traditional Istanbul, serving the same dishes in the style they have over the years. Some modern diners may struggle to adjust to an authentic '50s meal, with its simple presentation and higher oil levels. Don't expect dishes that are fancy, new or different, just the old favourites, like lentil soup, döner kebab, lamb shanks and grilled sea bass done to higher standard than your neighbourhood kebab restaurant. It has a reputation for the quality of its meat, particularly for its fish.
